How to Clean a Mop Head

Spin mops are great at keeping your house spic and span. But how about cleaning the mop? The mop head on the spin mop are made from thick cotton fiber which are originally meant to give a thorough cleaning, but when left unused and unclean can be the breeding ground for harmful strains of bacteria and mold that can put you at risk. This is why you need to clean the mop heads regularly and thoroughly to stop bacterial and mold growth.

Apart from preventing bacterial growth, the mop microfiber towel head’s ability to absorb and clean water and grime from your floors is greatly enhanced when you clean the mop head regularly by soaking it overnight in a cleaning solution.

The Step-by-Step Guide

1. Before you can get to clean the mop head, you need to decouple it from the mop handle by loosening the nut that holds it in place. Most commercial mops use a single wing nut that you can loosen to decouple the mop head from the handle.

2. Take the mop head to a sink or tub for a hot water rinse, kneading the cotton fibers of the mop head with your glove-covered hand. Continue this process until the water after the rinse is devoid of dirt.

3. The next step is an overnight soak of the mop head fibers with bleach and boiling water to kill the bacteria and mold. Leave the mop head in the sink or the tub overnight for the bleach and hot water to penetrate the fibers and kill the harmful growth. If the mop head is made of sponge or other material that are easily damaged by chlorine you should avoid this process.

4. After overnight soaking, use running hot water to rinse the mop head once more to rid the fibers of the bleach. For drying the cleaned mop head more efficiently, spread the fibers wide when you hang the mop head. The dried mop head is ready for use once it is reattached to the mop handle.

Other Warnings:

* While soaking the mop in the bleach, ensure that you do not soak them for too long which can lead to re-growth of bacteria and mold.

* Make sure the mop is completely dry before placing it in its storage place. Otherwise, the mop might get moldy.
